Events causing plight, damage and death tolls, such as forest fires, earthquakes, floods, landslides, storms, famines, migrations and oil spills, are increasing and efficient disaster-management during the prevention, crisis and relief phases has become a necessity.
National and international civil protection agencies have used earth observation (EO) successfully in a number of emergency situations. EO contributes in a number of ways – from the generation of risk maps for prevention purposes to the issuing of storm warnings and subsequent preparations for evacuations, as well as damage assessment for efficient rehabilitation of disaster-hit areas.
