Civil Security

Efficient and rapid response to crises and emergencies associated with natural, technological, and humanitarian disasters are of paramount importance for the protection of human lives. Events causing plight, damage and death tolls, such as forest fires, earthquakes, floods, landslides, storms, famines, migrations and oil spills, are increasing and efficient disaster-management during the prevention, crisis and relief phases has become a necessity.

National and international civil protection agencies have used earth observation (EO) successfully in a number of emergency situations. EO contributes in a number of ways – from the generation of risk maps for prevention purposes to the issuing of storm warnings and subsequent preparations for evacuations, as well as damage assessment for efficient rehabilitation of disaster-hit areas.
