Mining Sector Reform

Many developing countries in the world have favourable geologic conditions that provide considerable potential in terms of economic mineral and hydrocarbon deposits but lack the institutional, administrative and technical capacities to manage such resources.

An important policy of the World Bank Group and other international donor organisations is to identify and implement reforms necessary to foster the development of minerals and hydrocarbons on an efficient and sustainable basis in order to make countries attractive for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration and development.

The main objective of such reform projects is to strengthen institutional capacity within the responsible national authorities in order to enable administration and regulation of private sector led exploration mining and petroleum development projects and to achieve technically, socially and environmentally sustainable private sector mineral investment.
