Today, the observation of planet Earth from space is daily routine. Satellites and sensors are circling the globe continuously and are providing scientists and other professional users as well the general public with information and extraordinary views of our blue planet. 25 years ago the Landsat programme started the era of spaceborne civilian Earth Observation. Nowadays, a multitude of satellite systems are in orbit. They are operated by a number of countries and organisations and give access to up-to-date information of our planet by seamlessly covering the Earth's surface. They reveal surprising details and show features difficult and sometimes impossible to detect by conventional means in this short amount of time. The typical time it takes for a satellite to go once round the globe is only 90 minutes! |
