Satellite data help to detect artisanal mining - GAF AG develops the “ASM Alert” web platform

GAF has developed and implemented an easy-to-use web-based system to recognise indications of unlicenced artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in tropical forests - the “ASM Alert” platform. The platform combines free and publicly available satellite data – in particular European Copernicus Sentinel imagery - with a number of other geodata layers and machine-learning for the analysis. The platform then enables the ordering of commercial, very-high-resolution (VHR) satellite imagery for the identified target areas. The implementation project is being conducted by GAF, Germany, together with the partner IES, Netherlands, and is funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). ASM Alert can be accessed at: https://asmalert.gaf.de

GAF AG appointed project lead for the Land Rights Administration Modernisation Programme - PROMOGEF in Senegal

A consortium under the lead of GAF AG will implement the “Programme de Modernisation de la Gestion Foncière” (PROMOGEF), the Land Rights Administration Modernisation Programme of the Senegalese Government and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), funded via the KfW Development Bank. The programme supports the provision of a decentralised, efficient, transparent and accountable land rights administration, with the first phase scheduled for completion by 2025.

Copernicus Land Monitoring Service: Consortium of GAF, GeoVille and VITO starts HighResolution Layer Vegetated Land Cover Characteristics Project

The European Environment Agency (EEA) recently awarded a contract to a consortium under the lead of GAF with the partners GeoVille and VITO to implement the new High-Resolution Layer (HRL) Vegetated Land Cover Characteristics (VLCC), as part of the pan-European Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS). Its rich product portfolio will ensure both the continuation and evolution of successful precursor HRLs, such as Forest and Grassland, and the establishment of new HRL products focusing on crops and agricultural practises. The implementation of HRL VLCC will happen with funding by the European Union.

GAF becomes a member of the BDI initiative NewSpace

GAF AG, a renowned company in the area of satellite-based Earth observation applications and space, has become a member of the new BDI initiative NewSpace.

The Federation of German Industries (BDI) founded the NewSpace initiative to take into account the increasing importance of aerospace and the ever-increasing commercialisation in traditional economic sectors of applications relating to space technology.

#Ausgezeichnet!

A key to the GAF world in 3D – Dr. Pablo d’Angelo (DLR) awarded the Manfred Fuchs Innovation Prize

Dr. Pablo d’Angelo, from the Remote Sensing Methodology Institute (IMF) at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), was awarded the Manfred Fuchs Innovation Prize for his elevation model algorithm by the Society of Friends of DLR (GvF) on 11/11/2021. This algorithm has enabled the development of very high resolution and extremely precise elevation models.

Dr. Sebastian Carl, GAF CEO, gave a speech praising the DLR scientist: “His algorithm has been an absolute game changer. It allows us to generate and provide surface models with resolutions of 30 cm to 5 m from any source data in various forms under the label GAF Elevation Suite as standard products. Since 2008, we have produced almost 13 million km² of coverage with a 5 m resolution and over 100,000 km² in VHR resolutions of 50 cm and better.”
