[2-DAY WORKSHOP] Urban Development From Space: Impacts of Earth Observation on Development

The ESA EO4SD Urban Project lead by GAF AG and implemented with a Consortium of European Service Providers has organized with the World Bank a final Workshop in Washington DC from 21-22 January 2020 with the objective to review the achievements of the project, and use the lessons learned to forge a way forward with the Bank to ensure a sustainability to the co-operation.

The Director for the Global Practice on Urban, Disaster Risk Management, Resilience & Land (GPURL) – Dr. S. Wahba will open the Workshop and several of the Bank Experts will provide feedback on the utility of the EO4SD Urban geo-spatial data for their urban development programmes. This high-level event is evidence of the strong relations that have been developed between the Bank, the European SPs and ESA in the past 3.5 years, which is envisaged to continue in the years ahead.”

GAF AG to establish the new Mining Cadastre in Chad

After prevailing against international competition in the tendering process, GAF has been awarded the contract to set-up a reliable and efficient mining cadastre system in Chad. This includes the provision of institutional strengthening measures and capacity building regarding the management of mining titles both centrally and at the local level. In the project, GAF will integrate its leading platform for cadastral solutions, eMC+, which will be customised to suit the needs of the Ministry of Mines, Development of Industry and Commerce and Promotion of Private Sector (MMDICPSP) and its agencies.  An important factor for the long-term sustainability of the project is the availability of the system’s source code.

GAF AG joined the Smart City Expo World Congress from the 19th until the 21th of November 2019 in Barcelona, Spain. The Expo was a global event with around 24 000 visitors from 146 countries. This mega event was dedicated to create a better future for cities and their citizens worldwide by promoting social innovation, establishing partnerships and identifying business opportunities.

GAF AG was not only presenting the GAF Multi-Stereo Elevation Suite and its 3D visualisation in the GAFmap ® software as a part of the Bavarian Delegation, but was also representing the ESA EO4SD-Urban project at the ESA booth.

GAF AG has successfully completed a pilot project for the monitoring of agricultural parcels

GAF AG has successfully completed a pilot project for the monitoring of agricultural parcels for the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry (StMELF), as part of CAP2020.

The Company has developed and validated an automatic monitoring approach for agricultural parcels using satellite data. This aims to ease the burden of on-the-spot-checks for agricultural administrations. Twelve different monitoring scenarios were automatically evaluated, using high resolution open access earth observation data collected by the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite constellation. The potential of very high resolution PLANETSCOPE data for overcoming constraints in monitoring smaller parcels was also investigated in this project.

Study Trip for Delegation from Mozambique

In the context of the Project “Consultancy Service for Design, Development and Implementation of a National lntegrated Water Resources Management Information System” a workshop was performed by GAF. The workshop included training on integrated water resource management, planning and system development as well as on data processing and use of EO products and services and 3- D visualisation.

The Project is funded by World Bank and is managed by the consortium of GAF AG, as lead and AHT GROUP AG.

Bridging the digital divide

GAF AG developed an internet browser based Land Cover Mapping Tool with support from the European Space Agency (ESA), which fully utilises the high temporal resolution of Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite data without the need of local data storage and processing.

A cloud computing backend enables users to remotely access and process large data volumes for their mapping task. The tool was successfully demonstrated during a 3 day workshop held in Malawi, which experiences the challenge of slow and unstable internet connection common in many developing countries. Together with staff members of the Department of Forestry (DoF), several sites in Malawi were mapped. The integration of multiple Sentinel-2 image acquisitions and the derivation of statistical measures thereof helped to overcome challenges in mapping tropical dry forest.
