For our Land Monitoring department at our headquarters in Munich we are looking for several Junior Experts (m/f/d) for GIS and Earth-Observation-based Land Cover mapping and monitoring.

You will support us in projects of the European Copernicus Land program, especially in the field of vector/raster data processing and high-resolution satellite image time-series classification.

 

Your tasks:

  • Vector and Raster data processing
  • Thematic and semantic quality control of vector and raster data in particular of land cover/land use products
  • Regional calibration of machine learning models for EO-based land cover classification incl. quality control of training data and model outputs
  • Image interpretation from high and very high resolution satellite imagery and derivation of high quality products
  • Cooperation and guidance together with international partners and departments

Requirements:

Your profile:

  • BSc / MSc degree, or proven experience, in a relevant subject, e.g. Geography, Environmental Sciences, Remote Sensing, …
  • Deep knowledge of GIS applications (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS)
  • Knowledge and practical experience with Sentinel-2 data and time series
  • Experience in land use/land cover classification
  • Experience in handling large amounts of data (vector and raster data processing)
  • Experience in handling in-situ data (e.g. OSM, national datasets)
  • Basic understanding of a high-level programming language such as Python that enables you to read and understand basic scripts
  • Fluency in English is required, knowledge of German is welcome
  • Self-motivated, independent, structured and responsible work style in a team-oriented environment
  • Perfect colour vision

 

Desirable knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the EU Copernicus Earth Observation Program
  • Practical work experience
  • Advanced programming skills (e.g. Python)
  • Basic/Advanced understanding of Deep Learning algorithms
  • Knowledge and practical experience in visual interpretation of satellite image data in the field of land cover/land use
  • Good command of the ArcGIS Model Builder
