The second phase contract for topographic mapping in the DR of Congo has now been awarded to GAF

GAF AG, together with its partner Telespazio Iberica has begun to map an additional 49,000 sqkm in the northeast of the country based on high-resolution optical satellite data. The consortium has already successfully mapped 84,000 sqkm to support the activities under PROMINES (support to the mining sector project). The maps in scale 1:50,000 (s. example) comply with international standards, and will later be used as base information for geological and mineral potential mapping. This will follow in later stages of this project, which is funded and supervised by the World Bank, Washington.

Slogans created by the GAF staff!

In June, we asked our complete staff to think about a new slogan for GAF. We received so many great slogans! The selection of the “one” slogan was too hard for us. For that reason, we decided that we have to use more than one! Take a closer look at our GAF slogan cloud!

GAF contributes towards future hyperspectral imaging system

User requirements form the very basis for a future hyperspectral satellite mission. As partner in a study on Hyperspectral Imaging Mission Concepts for the Next-Generation Copernicus Space Component, GAF has coordinated the consolidation and assessment of user requirements. This work has been performed with partners including DLR German Aerospace Agency and GFZ Geoforschungszentrum Potsdam and covered a comprehensive number of application domains. Starting from this the lead partner OHB could then develop different mission configurations and a baseline concept.

The work has been carried out in the frame of the HYPERNEXT study, led by OHB Bremen and is funded by and performed for ESA. A summary of the study results is scheduled to become available on the ESA website.

Open call for R&D applications with free-of-charge 5 m DSM

GAF continues to provide ocean colour data to ESA operationally

GAF, the exclusive supplier in Europe of optical Indian Remote Sensing data from several missions, continues the operational provision of ocean colour data from the Ocean Colour Monitor aboard the Indian Oceansat-2 in near real time to ESA to further promote scientific research and applications.

ESA and GAF agreed the continuation of the data acquisition from the Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM) aboard the Oceansat-2 Indian remote sensing (IRS) satellite until 31 Mar 2019. Part of the agreement is also an option to extend the operations up to 31 Mar 2020.

GAF promotes Earth observation for forestry in Africa

GAF has been awarded a contract to strengthen human and infrastructural capacities in the framework of the OSFACO (Spatial Observation of Forests of Central and West Africa) project. OSFACO aims to improve knowledge of land use dynamics in several African countries through the use of Earth Observation. This comprises the provision of high resolution satellite images, support of in-country land-use and land-use change mapping and promotion of satellite imagery use. GAF and its partner SIRS are now starting activities in the Central African Republic, Gabon and Guinea-Conakry. Focus is the delivery of remote sensing & GIS training for forest- and agricultural monitoring as well the provision of IT equipment.
