GMES and AFRICA – assisting the African Union Commission with the implementation of Earth Observation services that support sustainable development in Africa

Challenge

The GMES and Africa Programme aims to promote the sustainable management of natural, water, marine and coastal resources. Its specific objective is to improve African policymakers’ and planners’ capacities to design, implement, and monitor national, regional and continental policies. To this end, Earth Observation (EO) data and derived information are being employed to meet the sustainable resource management aims. The programme has a continental scope and involves a total of 12 consortia, consisting of more than 150 institutions from 44 countries throughout Africa.

Solutions created by GAF

Provision of a technical assistance team working with the GMES and Africa Programme coordination group at the AUC in Addis Ababa. The team consists of three permanent experts plus additional consultants and trainers when required. They support the AUC and the 12 implementing consortia throughout Africa in matters relating to land, marine and water resources management, and state-of-the-art use and application of Earth Observation and geospatial technologies.
