Production Coordinator and Technical Expert for Copernicus LCLU downstream Services

To further strengthen our team for thematic applications at our headquarters in Munich, we are looking for a committed

Production Coordinator and Technical Expert for Copernicus LCLU downstream Services

Our unit Thematic Applications consists of an international team of experts and is responsible for the implementation of a wide range of projects in the fields of land monitoring, land cover and land use as well as topographic mapping. Many of our projects are embedded in the Copernicus programme.

Your tasks:

  • Support to project management for project reporting and documentation
  • Collaboration within a small team, across departments and with international partners and coordination of production
  • Regional calibration and roll-outs of machine learning models for EO-based land cover classification and estimation of biophysical variables
  • Pre-and post-processing of vector and raster data
  • Thematic interpretation of high and very-high resolution optical satellite imagery and derivation of high-quality products
  • Creation and quality control of training and validation datasets
  • Thematic, geometric and semantic quality control of vector and raster data, in particular of land cover/land use products

Your profile:

  • Educational Background: BSc / MSc degree in a relevant subject, e.g. Geography, Environmental Sciences, Remote Sensing or similar
  • Minimum 2 years relevant working experience in remote sensing, digital image processing /interpretation, GIS applications, land cover/land use mapping, hydrology/hydrography
  • Knowledge of the European Copernicus Earth Observation Program and in particular the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service
  • Solid knowledge of GIS applications (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS)
  • Solid understanding of land use/land cover classification and change concepts
  • Good understanding of remote sensing basics and knowledge of EO data processing
  • Basic understanding of a high-level programming language (e.g. Python, R) that enables you to read and understand basic scripts.
  • Fluency in English (C1 level according to the CEFR) and
  • Good knowledge of German (at least B1 level according to the CEFR)
  • Self-motivated and independent, but also with a collaborative working style in a team-oriented environment
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methodologies and workflows
  • Analytical and solution-oriented mindset

Desirable knowlegde:

  • Experience in handling in-situ data (e.g. OSM, national datasets)
  • Experience in handling large volumes of data (vector and raster data processing)
  • Practical experience in visual interpretation of satellite image data in terms of land cover/land use
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning models is a plus
  • Good command of the ArcGIS Model Builder

Further information:

Full-time, 40 hours per week and starting at the earliest possible date.
Initially limited to 2 years, with a subsequent option for a permanent contract.
